Quinta das Lágrimas, member of the “Small Luxury Hotels of the World”, is a retreat of peace and tranquility set within an 18th century palace surrounded by 12 acres of lush gardens, in Coimbra.
This is much more than just a charming hotel. The comfort of its rooms and suites is complemented by a medieval legend of love.
It was at the Quinta that in the XIVth-century Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro lived their forbidden love affair. Legend says that it was here that Inês cried for the last time, while being pierced by the daggers of the killers sent by King Afonso, Pedro’s father. Her blood still colors the stone-bed of the fountain that was born of her tears - the tears that gave the name to this romantic estate.
The palace has several rooms and verandas that offer perfect retreats to read or enjoy a quiet conversation. The Quinta’s library, completely covered with panels of exotic woods, has thousands of ancient books that narrate the history of Portugal and of the family that for centuries has welcomed guests in this Estate of Tears.
The hotel offers three different atmospheres: the Palace, Garden and Spa guestrooms. Besides that, you can dinner at Arcadas (one of the 500 best restaurants in the world for “Le Liste”),visit the Bamboo Garden Spa with its exclusive treatments and the private golf course (9 hole, par 3 Pitch&Putt) a driving-range. Quinta das Lágrimas has a world class collection of gardens that are a true natural museum where rare trees are exhibited as if they were works of art.
